One day, Athens residents may be able to use public transit to reach metro Atlanta, which now requires spending an hour and a half behind the wheel or relying on a private service. Athens-Clarke County Transit hopes to launch a pilot program for running buses along Georgia 316 to MARTA's Doraville station. Under the proposal, buses would depart Athens at 5:45 a.m. and 7:45 a.m. and head back at 5:45 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. Each trip would take about two hours to complete. The project would be funded by Georgia Department of Transportation's Transit Trust Fund Program, which is being rolled out for the first time this year to provide smaller communities with grant dollars for transit enhancements.
